Non-metallic inclusion (NMI) deposition in a slide-gate submerged entry nozzle (SEN)

Abstract Clogging of the submerged entry nozzle (SEN) is a common and persistent issue in continuous casting process for steel alloys. The dominant clogging mechanism has been attributed to deposition accumulation non-metallic inclusions (NMI) melt. Prior studies NMI assume that every collision between an inclusion wall results adhesion, which unrealistic. In this study, macroscopic transport model fluid motion combined with microscale adhesion applied slide-gate nozzle. Eight sticking probabilities ( S ) three linear opening positions are explored. Simulation indicated more closed slide-gate, greater total NMI. When was partially open, particle area number density highest above, within just below slide-gate. But when fully opened concentrated upper tundish Deposition behaviour fell into two regimes based on . ≤ 0.05, low increased rapidly probability. ≥ high but changed very little Changes probability did not significantly affect locations or relative distribution particles
